What is Office 365, Microsoft Exchange Online

Microsoft Office 365 is a bundle of programs and services for sending email, storing documents, and collaborating online. Since this runs on cloud environment, it is available remotely round the clock. Moreover, enterprises need not have their own servers and they can fully rely of Microsoft's 99.9% reliable hosting solutions.

Microsoft Exchange Online (which is used for sending and receiving emails) is an integral part of Microsoft's Office 365 bundle.

You might be thinking what it’s the difference between traditional Exchange Server and Cloud hosted Exchange Server?

Well, first of all Microsoft Exchange Online is hosted by Microsoft compared to traditional Exchange Server which were hosted by individual organizations within their intranet area. Some companies provided external access to their servers using public IP addresses.

Moreover, Microsoft Exchange Online is a much improved version of server and it has a rich html client interface. It allows users to interact with each other using integrated Instant Messenger. Advanced directory lookup (now you can see profile images), SMS integration etc.

Unlike traditional version of Exchange Server, cloud hosted version has lot more mailbox space per user to offer. It provides up to 25 GB of mailbox space per user. So virtually you don't need to download emails to your computer now! Since Microsoft Office 365 is a subscription based service, it depends on the type of subscription an organization has taken.
